It isn’t by some magical accident what you see at the top of the list one Google. It’s also no accident that the same results populate anytime you perform a search on Google. There is a process to achieving page 1, or even the top spot on that search. The process is called SEO or search engine optimization. It’s exactly what it sounds like. Optimizing your page so that google recognizes you as a value to whomever is processing the search. It’s an ever-evolving game of cat and mouse between you and your competitors. It’s also a game that has rules that Google changes to ensure the pages that hold the best value for their client climbs to the top.

So, what exactly is the process that Google uses to decide the difference between the good pages and the bad? The process is complex and we don’t know everything google checks. We do know through testing what some of the most important factors are.
The most important factor is going to be the content on your page. Not only is that because it’s going to help you out with google but it’s also what is best for your business. If you have poor content google is going to see that and throw you further down the list. If you want to be relevant, you are going to want to be on page 1. Just think about how many times you yourself have traveled to page 2? Probably very few, if any at all.
What are Keywords?
Keywords are exactly what they sound like. They are words within your page that are descriptive of what the message of your content is. When someone types a search into google that is one of the things google looks for. Only problem with that is there are a lot of businesses offering the same things. Using a word like “shoes” isn’t going to get you very far. If you wanted to sell shoes your going to need to be more descriptive. Google is trying to assist the person searching to the best of their abilities. While you would rank for the word shoes if you want to be high on the list for google you’re going to need to use phrases like “most comfortable shoes in Dubuque”. As well as using these keywords within the Meta tags of your pages. Not only is it beneficial to use keywords in the meta tags for getting higher ranks with Google. It also is good for the human user who is searching so they can see some of the contents of your site within the google search.
What are Links?
The main type of links you are going to be looking for to gain traction with your Google ranking are going to be backlinks from exterior sites, or external links. So, for example if you are selling shoes and you can get someone like a fashion blogger to link to your site. This is going to generate backlinks that google values. Getting a link to your shoe website from something like a cooking blog isn’t going to hold any value to your customers. Google knows that, and does not hold these links to value like it would the fashion blog.
One of the most effective ways you can generate links is by creating content for other people. This is something that will take work. It’s not going to be as easy as reaching out to that fashion blog and requesting them to link to your site. While some bloggers might be willing to link to your site if they really like the product you offer, it’s more likely that they are going to want something in return. In this example going to someone who maybe has a fashion blog, and offering them to maybe write a review of a new line of shoes that you are going to carry. Then asking them to post it on their blog. Or offering them a free pair of shoes that they themselves can create a review or building an impactful outfit based around that specific shoe. Getting links is going to take work, it’s give and take. Having outbound links is also something you could offer. If you have your shoe store and that blogger takes the shoe and does her post on it. On your own site, it would be beneficial to both parties to have you link her post about those shoes on your site.
So, what’s the content?
The visitors that come to your page are there for one reason. The content that lies within the page. Be it something you are going to be selling, or some type of advice they seek, or just because they enjoy what you have to say. The content within the page has a specific message. This content is going to be geared around those keywords we mentioned earlier. Using these keywords within the content in a genuine way is factored into the way Google sees your page. Having something that you copy and paste from another site and brand as your own will be considered a detractor in the eyes of Google. Taking your keywords and pushing them over and over, is something that used to work with the algorithm Google used to use. This is not the case anymore. At Google they really are out to help the person behind the keyboard before the people behind the site. So to get our sites to the top of the list we need to take keywords that are easier to reach page 1. You aren’t going to reach page 1 on Google even if you have the best content if all you do is post your page online and cross your fingers. It takes lots of work with picking the right keywords and checking into Google analytics on where you rank for those keywords. Building your content around those keywords and adjusting your posts based on what you find.
